Educating Children Since 1877

Throughout our history, Brighton has been committed to providing excellence in teaching and learning and to providing a welcoming environment for children, their families and staff.

Brighton Public School, now known as Brighton Primary School was opened in 1877, with 19 children and William Jemson was the first Headmaster. Most of the children were daughters or sons of local farmers and lived in New Brighton. The original school consisted of two buildings, the bluestone building facing Brighton Road was built to accommodate 150 children and built next door the bluestone cottage was the residence of the Headmaster.

The school has been educating Deaf and Hard of Hearing children for over 60 years. Today, the Centre of Deaf Education is known for educating Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in an inclusive mainstream setting where Deaf culture and Auslan is celebrated.
